Be Safe, Plan Ahead, Know your skills, plan for the worst.

Plan and Prepare
• Research the trail thoroughly, including distance, difficulty, and current conditions.
• Inform a trusted person of your itinerary and expected return time; establish a check-in plan.
• Carry a map, compass, or GPS device and know how to use them; don’t rely solely on your phone’s signal.
• Review emergency procedures, including the location of nearby shelters and how to signal for help if needed.

Bring a Friend
• Risk Mitigation: Climbing with a partner allows for safer practices, such as belaying during technical ascents, spotting on tricky sections, and sharing the load of essential gear.
• Emergency Support: A partner can assist with injuries, administer first aid, or seek help in case of accidents or emergencies in remote areas.
• Navigation Assistance: Two people can cross-check maps, compasses, or GPS devices, reducing the risk of getting lost on complex or unfamiliar routes.

Knowledge is your Biggest Strength
Ensure You Have the Skills Before Getting on the Mountain
• Master Navigation: Learn how to read topographic maps, use a compass, and operate a GPS device to confidently find your way, even in low visibility or unmarked terrain.
• Build Technical Skills: Practice essential techniques such as rope handling, knot tying, belaying, and using crampons or ice axes for safe travel on steep or icy surfaces.
• Understand Mountain Hazards: Study weather patterns, avalanche risks, and altitude sickness symptoms to anticipate and respond to challenges effectively.
